GE’s Get Skills to Work initiative graduated its first class of veterans today. Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families is a partner in the program.
The GE initiative brings together major manufacturers with an eye toward hiring veterans. It also partners with educators to help close veterans’ skills gaps through training and provides skills matching for veterans and job openings.
The first group to complete classes through Get Skills to Work included 11 veterans, according to SU. They completed training in core manufacturing skill sets.

“We’re excited to see the partnerships between business and industry, education, workforce development, and military members and veterans result in completion of the [Get Skills to Work] program at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College,” James Schmeling, managing director and co-founder of the SU veterans institute, said in a news release. “Building on the lessons from this first partnership, we will incorporate case studies and ‘how-to’ guides into our [Get Skills to Work] toolkit to enable others to replicate, adopt and adapt what has been learned here.”
