SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse has sent 22 nurses to Stony Brook University Hospital on Long Island to help provide vital patient care in an area hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The nurses departed the hospital Thursday morning. Most of them will stay at Stony Brook University for two weeks. The Long Island university will provide food and lodging.
Hospitals on Long Island along with the rest of the New York City area have been inundated with sick patients during the coronavirus outbreak.

The Upstate nurses headed to Stony Brook University Hospital will work alongside staff in intensive-care units with critically ill patients on ventilators and in the emergency department.
“I am in awe of this incredible Upstate nursing team, but not surprised that our Upstate nurses have volunteered to take on this fight standing side-by-side with their Stony Brook nursing colleagues,” Nancy Page, chief nursing officer, said in a statement.
