WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Upstate Shredding, LLC and sister company Weitsman Recycling is expanding into the Watertown market with the purchase of Empire Recycling Corp.’s scrapyard there.
The yard, located at 511 Pearl St., is an indoor scrap-recycling facility.
Owego–based Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling will own and operate the location “effective at the end of next week,” according to a news release the company issued Thursday.

No financial terms of the acquisition were disclosed.
The Watertown location of Utica–based Empire Recycling is the only Empire facility involved in this deal.
When Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling was approached about acquiring Empire’s Watertown scrapyard, it made “perfect sense for our company and expansion efforts,” Adam Weitsman, CEO of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, contended in the news release.
“This is an area of the State that we are not yet in and we look forward to expanding north. We appreciate the opportunity to bring the Weitsman brand to the customers in Jefferson County and beyond. We look forward to community involvement and anticipate further employment opportunities to those in the area as we continue to grow the company,” said Weitsman.
Once the ownership transition occurs, Ben Weitsman of Watertown will retain its current staff and add five new employees.
Weitsman needs the additional workers, as the Watertown site will have an expanded days and hours of operation, the company said.
It also plans to provide the scrapyard with new equipment, building remodeling, and new landscaping.
Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling describes itself as “the East Coast’s largest privately held scrap metal processor.”
It operates 17 sites throughout New York and Pennsylvania. The company projects it will process more than 1 million tons of ferrous and 300 million pounds of nonferrous metal in 2016, according to its news release.
