BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — United Health Services, Inc. (UHS) recently announced it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification, the most advanced stroke certification that the commission offers.
UHS said it underwent a rigorous assessment by a team of Joint Commission reviewers who were on-site and evaluated compliance with certification standards including 24/7 availability of an acute stroke team, comprehensive diagnostic-testing services, experience providing the most complex stroke treatments, and the 24/7 ability to meet the needs of two complex stroke patients at the same time.
The Joint Commission standards are developed in consultation with health-care experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. The certification is offered in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

To achieve the certification, UHS formed a multidisciplinary team last year under the leadership of Sumeet Multani, a stroke/neuro interventional surgeon, and Dawn Wage, UHS stroke program coordinator, to prepare. The team includes representatives from various patient-care areas including nursing, diagnostic imaging and radiology, pharmacy, laboratory, and members of the medical staff representing the stroke program.
