SYRACUSE — Captain John C. Luby and Major Gayle B. Luby took over as area coordinator and associate area coordinator, respectively, for The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area on June 26.
The Lubys come to Syracuse from Providence, R.I., where they served as Rhode Island state coordinator and associate state coordinator, respectively, as well as the corps officers (pastors) for the Providence Corps, according to a Salvation Army news release.
Captain Luby has replaced Major George Polarek, who recently relocated to the Salvation Army’s territorial headquarters in West Nyack, N.Y. Luby has held prior appointments with the Army in the Adult Rehabilitation Center, Eastern Territory Finance Department, and in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to the Army, he spent 25 years in corporate finance with firms including the Blackstone Group, Citicorp, and Salomon Smith Barney, the release states.

Captain Luby holds an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame, with post-graduate studies at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. He served as an adjunct professor in the Graduate Business School at Columbia University for more than 10 years, leading classes in mergers and acquisitions and capital markets, the news release noted.
Major Gayle Luby has served for more than 30 years as a commissioned officer for the Salvation Army, with assignments in Corps (pastor) and appointments in Greater New York divisional headquarters and the Eastern territorial headquarters. She holds an undergraduate degree from Slippery Rock University and a master’s degree in divinity from Alliance Theological Seminary.
Together, the Lubys have 37 combined years of service with the Salvation Army, according to the release.
