SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Orange and Pittsburgh Panthers football teams will face off at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 11 to mark the centennial anniversary of the first football game played at Yankee Stadium.
“This game is 100 years in the making and will celebrate a milestone anniversary in a historic venue,” John Wildhack, director of athletics at Syracuse University, said in Monday’s announcement. “The unique circumstance of a centennial anniversary, coupled with six strong opponents scheduled to visit the JMA Wireless Dome, will make this year’s home schedule an impactful experience for our student-athletes and continue a longstanding partnership with the Yankees organization. I look forward to our fans giving us a tremendous home field advantage in Yankee Stadium, just as they have in all our previous trips.”
The first meeting between Syracuse and Pitt at Yankee Stadium, a 3-0 Orange victory, came on Oct. 20, 1923 — in front of 30,000 fans at the old stadium.

The 1923 game between the two teams laid the groundwork for a “long history” of football at Yankee Stadium, Syracuse said in Monday’s announcement. The current venue and its predecessor have now hosted more than 200 college-football games, 10 of which involved Syracuse.
The current Yankee Stadium also hosts the Pinstripe Bowl, which the Orange have played in three time, including this past December in a loss to Minnesota.
Syracuse will host Clemson, Army, Wake Forest, Boston College, Colgate, and Western Michigan in the JMA Dome this season, with road dates scheduled at Florida State, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech.
