
HORSEHEADS, N.Y. — New York State Police say they arrested a Corning man on Friday, July 25 for allegedly stealing more than $2,100 worth of merchandise from the Walmart store at 1400 County Route 64 in the town of Horseheads.
State Police in Horseheads arrested Peter E. McCarthy, age 47, of Corning, for grand larceny in the 4th Degree (a Class E felony) following a reported theft of merchandise from that Walmart store.
At about 4 p.m., State Police were dispatched to the Horseheads Walmart after the store’s asset protection (security) staff observed a male suspect exit the store with two full shopping carts of unpaid merchandise valued at $2,142.88. The suspect was seen walking toward a nearby Starbucks location on County Route 64.

Troopers located the male suspect, who the State Police identified as McCarthy. He was transported back to the Walmart, where he was positively identified by the store asset protection staff. McCarthy was then transported to the State Police (SP) station in Horseheads for processing.
Further investigation revealed McCarthy had an active Superior Court warrant out of SP Horseheads and an additional warrant from the Elmira City Police Department. Due to McCarthy’s prior felony convictions and outstanding warrants, he was arraigned in Town of Horseheads Court before Judge Craig Banfield and remanded to the Chemung County Jail without bail, the State Police explained.
McCarthy’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 13, at 9 a.m.
