CORTLAND, N.Y. — Guthrie Cortland Medical Center says the first of a three-phase reconstruction of its Alvena Avenue parking lot will start July 24.
Once complete, the project will provide better parking for individuals with limited mobility; a “safer, cleaner experience” for patients, visitors and Guthrie caregivers; and a “more aesthetically pleasing look for neighbors,” Guthrie said in its Wednesday announcement.
The work area includes the portion of the parking lot directly across from the nursing and rehabilitation center and extending to Evergreen Street. Parking will not be available in this area. Visitors and patients will still have access to a portion of the current parking lot. Guthrie also plans to move caregiver parking to alternate locations.

In late September, Guthrie will reopen the first phase section to visitors and patients, and the remaining portion of the lot will be closed for the second phase. During that phase, Alvena Avenue will be permanently closed off at the end nearest the emergency department and access to Alvena will only be available from Homer Avenue, Guthrie said.
The third phase, which includes the loop at the hospital’s front entrance, will begin as the second phase is wrapping up. A specific timeline will be determined as the project moves forward.
Construction crews are scheduled to be on-site Monday-Thursday each week, from 7 a.m. through 5:30 p.m. The entire project is expected to be completed in 16 weeks, pending weather delays.
