SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The City of Syracuse will host an informational session regarding the proposed redesign of the Hanover Square fountain on Monday, April 15 from 4–7p.m. at 110 S. Warren St. in Syracuse.

The City of Syracuse Department of Parks & Recreation will host the session in partnership with QPK Design. It will offer a chance to learn about the project, ask questions, and provide feedback, per the city’s announcement.

The proposed redesign includes a “more resilient” façade, lighting enhancements, a cascading water feature, and additional seating around the fountain.

The Hanover Square fountain was originally designed and constructed in the early 1980s to introduce a new public plaza for events and gatherings in downtown Syracuse, the City of Syracuse said. Over the years, continued exposure to weather “impacted the structural integrity” of the fountain’s original brick–terraced cladding.

The fountain was taken out of commission in 2022 while crews conducted a complete assessment of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The results helped identify and develop next steps for the rehabilitation of the fountain, the city noted.

“We’re excited to move forward with the rehabilitation of the fountain,” Tony Williams, commissioner of the Syracuse Department of Parks & Recreation, said. “Investing in our aging park infrastructure is restoring the vibrancy of this gathering place for the community to continue to enjoy and invest in for many years to come.”

In the event of inclement weather, the informational session will be held at the Clinton Square Ice Rink warming room at 2 S. Clinton St. in Syracuse.
