BINGHAMTON — iA, a company that provides an integrated pharmacy fulfillment platform for retail, health system, and government pharmacies, on May 8 hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated iA national headquarters in Binghamton.

In addition to manufacturing space, the facility includes an innovation hub, which it describes as the “first of its kind in the industry,” showcasing an advanced central pharmacy fulfillment technology center and training facility for pharmacy workers.

“We are thrilled to share our newly renovated headquarters and demonstrate our dedication to innovation and community investment,” Tom Utech, CEO of iA, said in the firm’s May 8 announcement. “We’re proud to partner with the city of Binghamton to be a part of their revitalization efforts. This expansion isn’t just about bricks and beams but is a bold declaration of our commitment to our customers and their patients. We are redefining pharmacy automation with our cutting-edge solutions with the ultimate goal of improving patient care.”

iA expanded to Binghamton from Johnson City. The company still maintains manufacturing operations and several other departments at the Johnson City location, but the bulk of operations, including the business offices have relocated to Binghamton, the firm tells CNYBJ in a May 14 email.

“We are excited iA has chosen Binghamton’s First Ward for its newly renovated national headquarters,” Binghamton Mayor Jared M. Kraham said in the iA announcement. “The company’s expansion into the Charles Street Business Park means new activity for the Clinton Street corridor, with 85 employees on site, and more momentum for the First Ward. We are thrilled to see another growing company call Binghamton home.”

Kraham on July 11, 2023, had announced iA would create an innovation hub at the Charles Street Business Park, partially moving operations to the First Ward commercial property.

The company, which has had a location in Johnson City since 1972, recently began searching for a larger space to accommodate growing operations, per the July 2023 City of Binghamton announcement.

“At the heart of the renovation” is a customer innovation and collaboration space, where iA can demonstrate its advanced robotics and enterprise-software offerings to customers, which include major pharmacy retailers, online pharmacies, health care systems and government health care organizations, per the firm’s May 8 announcement.

“Our Innovation Hub will be the driving force behind our continued growth and success,” Utech contended. “This real-life showcase can be used for training, demonstrations, and testing and will bring our solutions to life for our customers and others to experience firsthand.”

iA was founded as Innovation Associates in 1972 in Johnson City. Its founder, Joseph (Harry) Boyer, worked at Singer-Link in Kirkwood prior to starting his own company, the firm tells CNYBJ. Innovation Associates was founded as a research and development firm operating in various industries and started focusing on pharmacy in 1997.

iA opened its global headquarters in Indianapolis in 2021.

BINGHAMTON — From adding locations in New York state to picking up customers from other states, Dataflow, Inc. has been growing in recent years and has no plans for that to change.

The company got its start in Binghamton in 1958 by Dale Zimmerman, providing microfilm products for its business customers to store data and blueprints. Early contracts with companies like IBM fueled Dataflow, but it had to pivot when IBM left the area.

Turning first to color printing and, later, to the internet, Dataflow has adapted to one that still offers data management, but also provides a host of printing services including branding materials, large-format printing, digital document workflows, and sign fabrication and installation.

“We recently just won a ‘best of’ large format print award,” Dataflow Marketing Manager Clarissa Reyna-Aboytes says.

From 2018-2022, Dataflow acquired four other companies, expanding its reach throughout New York, as well as broadening its product lines. The most-recent acquisition was Prolifiq Sign Studio in Edmeston. That deal gave the company new employees, a location in Edmeston, and new expertise in vehicle wrapping and decals.

Since then, Dataflow has been busy expanding its customer base, Reyna-Aboytes says, and landed Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken & Wings as one of its newer accounts.

Springfield, Virginia–based Hangry Joe’s has franchise locations in numerous states and uses Dataflow for its signage, as well as other products for franchises, she says.

This is possible through the company’s THiiNK Hub, which allows customers to manage all their design, printing, and branding through one system. That means Hangry Joe’s corporate offices can oversee all the design and branding and deciding what products are included, and then individual franchisees can purchase what they need for their locations, Reyna-Aboytes says.

“It’s a good solution for franchises,” she says. “It’s a great solution for small businesses, too, that want to sell some merchandise.”

“With Hangry Joe’s, we’re really expanding,” Reyna-Aboytes notes, and the company hopes it leads to more companies noticing Dataflow and joining their client list.

The company is also working to improve its online store with the goal of making it more user friendly, Reyna-Aboytes notes. Most of Dataflow’s customers are other businesses, used to putting in a product request and waiting for a quote.

But everyday consumers want to move faster. “In the near future, we do want to focus a little more on that community and consumer audience,” she says.

The changes will make the company more competitive against national online options like VistaPrint, Reyna-Aboytes contends, and give customers the option to work with a local company.

On the business-to-business side, Dataflow can provide a local school district with yard signs honoring all its graduates, she says. It can also offer complementary products on the consumer side.

“We could do a graduation poster for a mom,” she notes. Other products might include family shirts for something like a vacation or family reunion and other smaller “one-off” products.

Dataflow employs between 60 and 70 people with locations including its Binghamton headquarters, Albany, Corning, Edmeston, Elmira, Endicott, Ithaca, Rochester, and Utica. It also has an office in Punta Gorda, Florida.

Dataflow’s Binghamton office is located at 19 S. Washington St.

Receives $1 million federal grant for the effort

VESTAL — Binghamton University has plans to purchase advanced-packaging equipment for its nanofabrication laboratory (NLAB).

The university will use a federal funding award of $1 million to make the purchase. That money will only cover a portion of the cost, the school tells CNYBJ in a May 15 email.

The grant seeks to “bolster” workforce training for advanced chip manufacturing in cleanroom environments.

The funding is part of the fiscal year 2024 appropriations bills as a congressionally directed spending request, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D–N.Y.) and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) announced on April 2.

The federal-government money will help get students the skills they need for “in-demand” careers in the semiconductor industry, “being spurred by Schumer’s CHIPS & Science Law,” the senator’s office said.

“I am proud to deliver this $1 million federal investment to Binghamton University to supercharge the Southern Tier’s semiconductor workforce training with new state-of-the-art equipment that will help replicate real cleanrooms at chip companies,” Schumer said in the announcement. “Together with fantastic institutions like Binghamton University leading the way, we are ensuring the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators are trained and work here in Upstate NY.”

The senators said the purchase of new, advanced-packaging equipment will allow electronics with sub-micron circuitry to be fabricated, analyzed, and tested by participants from across industry and academia.

Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger said the project dovetails well with many of the university’s key goals.

“As a premier public university, we focus on education as well as access,” Stenger said in the Schumer announcement. “We also recognize our role and responsibility when it comes to workforce development. Equipping our laboratories with the latest tools gives our students and our industry partners an important advantage. I’m grateful for Senator Schumer’s continued partnership, and I look forward to seeing our cleanroom serve as a learning space for our own undergraduates as well as high school and community college students from the region.”

The equipment will provide students with hands-on training to prepare them for careers in semiconductor manufacturing.

The lab’s participants will be trained in next-generation electronics, including 2.5D and 3D chip packaging, “developing a pipeline of qualified talent” to support the growth of the advanced electronics manufacturing and packaging industry across upstate New York, Schumer’s office said.

Binghamton University estimates 100 people will receive training for jobs in industrial cleanrooms each year through short courses, certificate, and micro-credentialing programs.

Schumer and Gillibrand said this skilled talent pool will be important in helping attract new startups and supply-chain companies now looking at the region, following new major investments by companies like Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) that will help build a “thriving regional economy with good-paying jobs for future generations.”

Binghamton University’s S3IP Center of Excellence, which includes the NLAB, currently has more than 120 companies performing research in electronics packaging as well as areas related to materials, failure analysis, and reliability testing. The enhanced equipment will also benefit about 20 faculty members and 60 graduate-student researchers working on projects directly supported by the facility, “with the number expected to grow, Schumer’s office noted.

Efforts to reinvigorate the microelectronics industry in the U.S. rely on a skilled workforce, Bahgat Sammakia, VP for research at Binghamton University and director of the S3IP Center of Excellence, said in the Schumer announcement.

“Experience working with this state-of-the-art equipment in a cleanroom environment will give students a big boost when they enter the job market. And manufacturers in New York State and beyond will be able to recruit talented workers who have relevant expertise that can help their companies grow and thrive,” Sammakia said.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has designated the IDA as the lead agency for the New York State Environmental Quality Review (SEQRA) environmental-impact assessment of the property, according to a May 8 announcement from The Agency.

The Agency is the lead economic-development organization for Broome County, governing both the Broome County IDA and the Broome County Local Development Corporation (LDC).

The ruling allows the IDA to begin a “comprehensive, multi-step” process for developing a generic environmental impact statement (GEIS) analyzing the potential environmental impacts of a proposed sustainably designed technology park on 526 acres.

The GEIS will analyze potential impacts to the environment on and surrounding the site — such as to the land, air, water, traffic, and local utilities — and detail potential mitigation measures to avoid and/or minimize any adverse impacts. The GEIS is an important step in preparing a shovel-ready site on which businesses want to locate and bring good-paying, long-term jobs for area residents, helping restore the Southern Tier as a leader in technological advancement and business growth, the Agency contends.

While the Broome County IDA will lead the review, it plans to undertake a community-oriented process in which there will be multiple opportunities for public comment and input that can help shape the vision for a sustainable shovel-ready tech park.

“This project is focused on securing a bright economic future for Broome County as technology-related development booms across upstate,” Stacey Duncan, CEO of the Leadership Alliance, said in the announcement. “We believe that Broome County not only can lead the state in achieving sustainable development, we also can create a site that maximizes generational economic opportunities and makes a positive impact on the region. Our focus in the months ahead is on working with the community to hone a shared vision for the site that will meet diverse needs.”

Leadership Alliance is the strategic partnership between the Broome County IDA/LDC and the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce.

The IDA will set a timeline for the environmental review process and will announce to the public “in the weeks ahead.” The process is expected to start immediately and continue into 2025.

During that time, the Broome County IDA intends to hold a variety of public-input sessions. The IDA said public input will be “crucial” in shaping a plan for a “sustainably designed technology park that makes the greatest positive impact” on Broome County and the Southern Tier.

“As lead agency, the IDA takes very seriously the need for a thorough site review that includes community engagement to ensure we’re making the greatest possible positive impact with this project,” IDA Board Chairman John Bernardo said in the announcement. “We can’t allow the economic growth other communities are experiencing — and, more importantly, the significant opportunity it’s bringing for those currently in the workforce and for future generations — to pass Broome County by. We’re excited to get to work.”

“Our region is not defined by where we’ve been, but where we’re going, and now is our opportunity to set a shared vision for a strong future,” Jon Sarra, chairman of the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce board of directors, said. “The next steps for the Broome Technology Park are essential to defining our economy and how we meet the needs of our communities. I’m excited to work with the Broome County IDA and the community on a viable path forward that strengthens the region for decades to come.”

Since I took office, as Broome County Executive, in 2017, I have partnered with the county legislature to reduce the property tax rate by more than 20 percent. We have also worked with our state and federal partners to deliver important funding to promote economic development. Lowering taxes while securing important grants for economic development has helped in making Broome County business-friendly and an attractive community for companies that want to expand. This work is paying off.

Key projects

The most visible economic-development project in the Southern Tier can be found right here in Broome County at the former Oakdale Mall. What was nearly an empty mall a few years ago has now become Oakdale Commons. We partnered with a local redevelopment group led by Doug Matthews and Marc Newman to completely redevelop the site. They brought in new restaurants including Beer Tree Factory, Panera Bread, and Chipotle. The newly constructed Guthrie Lourdes Health and Fitness Center has more than 6,500 members, and the world’s largest Dicks Sporting Goods House of Sport opened last year. BJ’s Wholesale Club opened its 100,000-square-foot store earlier this year, with Dave and Busters set to join this summer. The county also built a new workforce-development center at the mall to help train workers for all our new jobs.

Boscov’s Department Store, one of the last downtown department stores left in the country, recently announced a
$10 million renovation to its building, along with a 10-year long-term lease extension. This important anchor store will attract more retail businesses, restaurants, and people to downtown Binghamton. This has all occurred with a great partnership between Broome County, Boscov’s leadership, Mayor Kraham, and Assemblywoman Lupardo.

UHS continues to invest in Johnson City. Over the last year, its $170 million Wilson Medical Center has appeared on the horizon, and UHS announced its grand opening in May, all while opening a new childcare center and 24/7 pharmacy. Through the $10 million Downtown Revitalization award from New York State, Johnson City continues to be a catalyst for infrastructure, housing, business development, and more.

The Agency and its leader Stacey Duncan, who have been key partners on so many of these projects in Broome County, are also contributing to the revitalization of Johnson City. The Agency was recently awarded an $11 million state grant to develop a 27-acre site at 600 Main St. right off the highway, paving the way for new development at a key strategic site.

Endicott continues to progress with its much-anticipated reconstruction of Washington Avenue. Several housing and economic-development projects will break ground this year with funding from the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The demolition of the old IBM building group will soon begin, funded in part by Broome County, making the rest of the Phoenix campus shovel-ready for development.

Binghamton University’s New Energy New York program received more than $250 million in state and federal grants, providing our community with the opportunity to lead the world in research, development, and manufacture of lithium-ion batteries. With Binghamton University’s designation as a federal tech hub, this innovative work can happen right here, in Broome County.

Workforce/housing issues

In April, Raymond Corporation announced it had purchased two large buildings in Kirkwood, expanding its operations into Broome County. And just down the road, the old Five Mile Point racetrack will be redeveloped into a state-of-the-art warehousing facility.

A recent county business survey released by the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce indicated that many of our employers are seeking to expand their workforce. At the same time, we still have many open positions to fill as well. We believe the key to doing that is to build more housing and grow our population of people who want to work. A recently completed Broome County housing study identified the need for an additional 6,000 units of housing, including all types: single-family homes, market rate, senior housing, and, affordable housing. The more housing we can build, the more jobs we can fill.

We expect to break ground on more than 500 units of housing this year, and most of these projects received American Rescue Plan Act funding from Broome County to get across the finish line. We worked with the Town of Union to demolish the former IBM Country Club in late 2022, clearing the way for 75 units of affordable housing.

Helio Health is prepared to break ground on the former Sheltered Workshop Court Street, Binghamton site, creating 108 units of affordable housing, some of those for local veterans. Additional housing projects set to take place in 2024 are 72 units of affordable housing, along with a 100-slot on-site daycare operation planned for 333 Grand Avenue in Johnson City, 40 units of market-rate housing at the former St. Ambrose Church on Endicott’s Washington Avenue, 68 units of affordable housing at the YWCA in Binghamton, and hundreds of apartments targeted for renovation at Town & Country Apartments on Binghamton’s North Side.

The first 10 tiny homes ever to be constructed in Broome County are planned for the Northside, too, in part with the county’s current build of a veterans’resource center, a one-stop-shop for all veterans’ resources.

As we continue to build housing, we also believe that it’s important to improve our public infrastructure as well. This will be a record year for infrastructure development in Broome County as we are set to pave more than 84 miles of roads and to renovate seven bridges. Our Greater Binghamton Airport renovation broke ground earlier this year, with substantial funding from state and federal grants — an opportunity to undertake a much-needed renovation while minimizing local taxpayer costs. We established a project labor agreement with many of our local trades, ensuring that the work is performed by local workers.

Continuing our historic parks-improvements program, the county has focused on completing two major park projects this year. In May, we celebrated the grand opening of the Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park, the largest softball park in New York state. With four new turf fields and cutting-edge lighting, it stands as the premier destination in the Northeast for softball enthusiasts. Every weekend from May to July is fully booked with tournaments. The park was unanimously chosen as the host site for the New York state girls’ softball championships for the next three years.

Grippen Park has also been under construction for some time with a completion target this fall. The entire building there is being renovated, with the addition of six new pickleball courts, and a skating rink for the winter. Renovation plans include walking paths, a basketball court, an accessible playground, a wiffle ball stadium, and a regulation-size flag football field.

It sure is a great time to live in Broome County, and the progress we achieve this year will undoubtedly strengthen our community for generations to come. SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The building complex on Syracuse’s North side — known for the shell of a red house on the roof — is now full of apartments.

New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR), along with elected officials and community leaders, formally opened the $55 million Moyer Carriage Lofts project early Thursday afternoon.

All 128 apartments are “affordable” for households earning at or below 60 percent of the area median income, the office of Gov. Kathy Hochul said in its announcement.

The development includes 50 units with supportive services provided by Catholic Charities of Onondaga County.

Rental and operating subsidies for these units will be funded through an Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative award administered by the New York State Office of Mental Health, per Hochul’s office.

Housing Visions and Redev CNY LLC, both of Syracuse, co-developed the Moyer Carriage Lofts.

The development included the extensive rehabilitation of the interior and exterior of the historic structure. The rehabilitated buildings were also designed to meet criteria for Enterprise Green Communities certification, Hochul’s office said. Environmentally sustainable features include low-flow fixtures, all LED (light-emitting diode) lighting, and Energy Star appliances.

State financing includes $3.6 million in permanent tax-exempt bonds; $26.7 million in state and federal low-income housing tax credits; and $10.7 million in subsidies from New York State Homes and Community Renewal.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has facilitated the use of federal and state historic rehabilitation tax credits that are estimated to provide nearly $14 million in equity.

The project also received an additional $6.4 million in state tax credits after successfully fulfilling requirements of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Brownfield Cleanup Program.

Additionally, the City of Syracuse contributed $500,000 in HOME funds, Hochul’s office noted.

Factory history

The factory complex, consisting of several buildings on the city’s North Side, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The H.A. Moyer Company was one of the largest industrial employers in Syracuse around the turn of the 20th century, producing carriages, and then later automobiles.

Constructed in several stages, primarily between 1882 and 1909, the factory complex includes brick buildings that were used for manufacturing, storage, and shipping, and also served as company headquarters, per Hochul’s office.

Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon announced the partnership on Thursday.

Surrounded by local restaurant owners, McMahon made the announcement outside the John A. Lally Athletics Complex on Syracuse’s South campus. SU men’s basketball coach Adrian Autry and SU football coach Fran Brown both attended the announcement.

Patrons at participating restaurants will have the opportunity to “round up” when paying the bill, McMahon said.

“And whether you’re rounding up to the dollar or rounding up with a couple of dollars, that would be the patron’s choice,” he noted.

The extra dollars and cents would benefit Orange United, and the student-athletes involved in the NIL program. Syracuse University (SU) Athletics back in September unveiled Orange United, which the school describes as the “preferred” NIL collective for Syracuse student-athletes to leverage their name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunitiesto earn money. Orange United is “powered” by Atlanta, Georgia–based Student Athlete NIL, or SANIL, SU said in its announcement.

NIL is playing a major role in college sports recruiting these days with mostuniversities deploying collectives to help compete as the average NIL deal needed to attract high-level recruits to commit to a university continues to rise in value.

The initiative also seeks to benefit area restaurant businesses and the local economyand community.

“Syracuse Athletics drives the hospitality industry,” McMahon said. “Coach Autry knows this and Coach Brown is learning this, when we are doing well in Syracuse athletics, the mental health of this community is much better.”

Some of the participating restaurants in the pilot program include Apizza Regionale; Emerald Cocktail Kitchen; Kitty Hoynes; Scotch ‘N Sirloin; Noble Cellar; King David’sRestaurant; Middle Ages Brewing Company; Trappers II Pizza & Pub; The Taphouse on Walton; Buried Acorn; Pavone’s Pizza; and Willow Rock Brewing Company.

The program begins June 1 and continues through Aug. 1, Mark Hayes, general manager of Orange United, said in his remarks at the Thursday morning announcement.

“We want to drive awareness. We want to drive foot traffic to these local establishments … and also supporting the mission to help our student-athletes,” Hayes added.

He also noted that selected SU student-athletes will provide their own engagement with the restaurants involved, including social-media posts and meet-and-greet events.

In answering questions from local reporters, McMahon also acknowledged that Onondaga County operates on sales taxes and could generate increased revenue as a result of the initiative.

“Every service we provide this community is driven by sales tax,” McMahon said. “[It’s a] $1.5 billion operation … our property taxes only make up about $150 million of the $1.5 billion. Everything else is from consumer spending. We need a competitive entertainment infrastructure.”
