OSWEGO, N.Y. — The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) has named SUNY Oswego President Peter Nwosu to chair its committee on student success.
The committee — which is composed of presidents of AASCU-member institutions —helps the organization in shaping its strategic agenda on student success. That agenda includes student-success programming; persistence and completion initiatives; career pathways and workforce development in alignment with upward mobility; and regional economic development, per the SUNY Oswego announcement.
Nwosu’s selection was announced at the committee’s fall 2024 meeting, which he chaired, as part of AASCU’s annual conference for presidents and chancellors of regional universities, which took place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Nov. 16-19.
Nwosu succeeds Tomás Morales, president of California State University, San Bernardino, who served in the chair role for five years.
“I am both pleased and humbled by this honor, which also reflects and recognizes SUNY Oswego’s commitment to a more educated region through our Vision 4040 and our new strategic plan,” Nwosu said in the SUNY Oswego announcement. “We are happy to share and amplify AASCU’s commitment to preparing students for success throughout their university years and beyond.”
“President Nwosu is an active and highly engaged AASCU member who is deeply committed to student success. This new role as chair of our student success committee will enable him to expand that commitment on a national level,” Jacquelyn Jones, assistant VP of student success at AASCU, said in the announcement. “We look forward to working with him to advance our student success initiatives in support of the 3 million students AASCU serves.”

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Central New York Sales & Marketing Executives (CNYSME) announced it has selected Jeff Knauss as the 48th recipient of its annual Crystal Ball Award.
Knauss, 38, a serial entrepreneur and angel investor who lives in Skaneateles, is the youngest Crystal Ball Award recipient since its inception in 1977.
CNYSME will present the award to Knauss during the Crystal Ball and Sales & Marketing Excellence Awards event, which is set for Thursday, May 15, 2025 at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown.
Described as an “enduring symbol of the organization’s mission,” the Crystal Ball is awarded annually by CNYSME to a CEO, president, or director of a Central New York business in recognition of their contributions to the sales and marketing profession and for their endeavors in the areas of community development and support.
Knauss started as the CEO and co-founder of Digital Hyve, a Syracuse–based digital-marketing firm. He is currently a partner and investor in 13 businesses ranging from various startups focused on medical research, professional networking, mobile-payment apps, commercial real estate, three restaurants (Hidden Fish, Clover’s, and XO Taco), diversity recruitment, and e-commerce.
“I’m incredibly honored to receive the Crystal Ball Award, which represents not just individual achievement but the power of a dedicated community and the importance of building something greater than yourself,” Knauss said in the CNYSME announcement. “Entrepreneurship isn’t just about growing businesses — it’s about uplifting those around you, fostering innovation, and giving back to the communities that support us. This award is a reflection of the collective effort of every team, mentor, and partner I’ve been lucky enough to have had along the way. I’m proud to be part of a region that embraces entrepreneurship and philanthropy so deeply, and I’m committed to using this recognition to further those ideals.”
“Jeff embodies everything the Crystal Ball Award represents. Not only his contributions to the sales and marketing community throughout Upstate New York, but to his relentless dedication to philanthropy and giving back,” Charles Harkola, president of CNYSME, said in the organization’s announcement. “He is a premier example of what leaders can and should aspire to and we’re excited to present him this year’s Crystal Ball.”
In addition to the Crystal Ball, local companies will award Sales and Marketing Excellence Awards to their top performing sales and marketing professionals within their organizations. Proceeds from the event will go toward Jeff Knauss’s charity of choice, South Side Community Growth Foundation, as well as scholarships to local students pursuing education in the sales and marketing fields, CNYSME said.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Binghamton University and BAE Systems inked a memorandum of understanding solidifying a mutual commitment to advancing power electronics and energy-storage research and development, workforce development, and testing initiatives.
Under the agreement, the university and BAE will collaborate on research and development in materials-performance modeling, manufacturing processes, and more for power and energy-storage applications, as well as develop education and workforce training programs ranging from high school to post-secondary education, continuing education, cooperative seminars, workshops, and conferences.
“Our collaborations with BAE Systems are broad and deep, from providing direct support to our students to working with our faculty on cutting-edge research to partnering on an Engineering Leadership Development Program,” Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger said in a statement. “To collaborate with a global company such as BAE Systems further strengthens our position as a national leader in energy research with deep local impact right here in the Southern Tier and surrounding regions.”
“We have had long-standing engagements with Binghamton University, and with Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science in particular, that have helped to advance energy and power management technology while also preparing the engineers that are shaping the industry,” BAE Systems Senior Director of Engineering Michael Crawford said. “Given our mutual interest in accelerating the next-generation technologies and future workforce in this arena, it is synergistic for academic and industry to work together to make this happen.”
BAE has long supported faculty research, student organizations, and senior capstone projects at Binghamton’s Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science.
“We look forward to expanding our research and development activities with BAE,” Watson College Dean Atul Kelkar said. “This agreement addresses strategic priorities for both BAE and the university that will advance the frontiers of engineering and technology for many years to come.”
The agreement will also boost NSF Engines: Upstate New York Energy Storage Engine, which served as a catalyst to accelerate collaboration between BAE, the university, and SUNY Broome Community College, especially in the area of workforce development. BAE will provide matching funds for workforce development grants it receives from the NSF Engine and support internships for Engine-nominated students.
SUNY Broome Chair of the Engineering Science Department Robert Lofthouse collaborated with BAE and Binghamton University to create a six-week, hands-on curriculum to introduce students to the power and engineering-management field.
“To date, 20 engineering-science students have participated in the program, and many are interested in pursuing bachelor’s degrees in engineering at Binghamton and entering the power and engineering-management sector,” SUNY Broome President Tony Hawkins said. “We’re eager to continue our partnership with the NSF Engine initiative, with plans to expand the program’s reach and impact by engaging high-school students across the region.”
