SYRACUSE — Dermody, Burke & Brown, CPAs, LLC (DB&B), a Syracuse–based accounting firm, has expanded its business footprint in the Mohawk Valley.
The firm has added Barone, Howard & Co., CPAs, P.C., an accounting and consulting firm with offices in New Hartford and Rome.
As of Nov. 1, Barone, Howard & Co. began operating under the Dermody, Burke & Brown name, the Syracuse firm announced Dec. 2.
The combination of these two firms will “enhance” client-service capabilities by “providing additional resources and expanded services,” Dermody, Burke & Brown contends.
“What it really provided for us was added depth in our existing New Hartford office,” says Madelyn Hornstein, CEO of Dermody, Burke & Brown, who spoke with CNYBJ on Dec. 3. “We’ve basically combined forces.”
Hornstein didn’t release any terms of the deal, but did note that, “No money changes hands upon this combination.”
Dermody, Burke & Brown added four principals with CPA (certified public accountant) credentials and nine associates in the combination.
With Barone, Howard’s 13 workers, Dermody, Burke & Brown’s employee count increases to more than 90.
The combination also expands the firm’s geographic footprint with the Rome office, which Dermody, Burke & Brown is “hoping to expand” in the future, Hornstein notes.
She declined to disclose the number of clients that Barone, Howard has been servicing.
Barone, Howard’s New Hartford employees relocated to DB&B’s newly expanded, 5,000-square-foot office in New Hartford.
Charles A. Gaetano Construction Corp. handled the expansion project at DB&B’s New Hartford office and finished the work in a few months. Bonacci Architects PLLC of Utica completed the design work, according to Hornstein.
When asked if DB&B pursued the expansion project for this deal, Hornstein replied, “Yes.”
John Barone, CPA and former managing partner at Barone, Howard, said the combination “was the right fit for us and our clients based on the mutual values we share. We look forward to expanding our scope of services and footprint.”
About the firms
Founded in 1956, Dermody, Burke & Brown describes itself as “one of the largest, locally owned and independent certified public accounting firms in Central New York.” The firm serves the region from four offices in Syracuse, Auburn, New Hartford, and now Rome. More than 75 percent of the firm’s client base is comprised of closely-held and family owned businesses.
Founded by John Barone and John Howard in 1981, Barone, Howard & Co. has “extensive experience” in privately owned businesses.

POTSDAM — The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Clarkson University a grant of $400,000 to construct a new “high-performance” computing cluster to support data and “computationally intensive” projects.
A computing cluster is a group of independent computers “most commonly” linked together through a high-performance network.
NSF awarded the funding in June and the grant started July 1, Melissa Lindell, director of media relations at Clarkson University, tells CNYBJ in an email.
The funding will facilitate the creation of a new computational cluster, “Accelerating Computational Research for Engineering and Science” (ACRES), at Clarkson. It will provide “state-of-the-art” computational resources to support current research and provide a structure for future growth, the school announced.
“Building upon the University’s strong history of high-impact fundamental and applied research, Clarkson faculty are increasingly pursuing data-intensive, intra- and inter-institutional collaborative activities,” Joshua Fiske, chief information officer at Clarkson and principal investigator of the NSF award, said in a statement. “Access to high-performance computing resources is critical to expanding these research activities.”
About the project
As proposed to the NSF, the project will support 10 active research initiatives in Clarkson’s four research focus areas. Those areas include data and complex system analytics; healthy world solutions; advanced materials development; and next-generation healthcare technologies.
“ACRES will facilitate research currently not practical or feasible,” said Fiske. “It also will support new student-learning opportunities through courses, undergraduate research, and an existing NSF research experience for undergraduates that focuses on high-performance computing.”
ACRES will be available for use by all Clarkson faculty and their research teams to support sponsored research, Brian Helenbrook, professor and chair of mechanical & aeronautical engineering, said.
“It will support the University’s increased focus on computational research as well as the hiring of additional computationally active faculty,” said Helenbrook, who is also the award’s co-principal investigator.
For users who need more than casual access to a shared computing environment, Clarkson will also offer faculty members the option of purchasing additional dedicated resources to augment ACRES by becoming ACRES owners.

SYRACUSE — Haylor, Freyer & Coon (HF&C) is settling into its new headquarters in downtown Syracuse.
The insurance firm on Dec. 5 formally opened its new office on the top two floors of One Park Place at 300 S. State St. in Syracuse with an open-house event. HF&C had moved into its new space earlier in the fall.
The firm previously operated at 231 Salina Meadows Parkway in the Salina Meadows Office Park, off Buckley Road in the town of Salina.
It’s the “largest corporate move into downtown Syracuse since 2016,” HF&C said, citing information from the City of Syracuse.
The One Park Place location will provide the firm additional space and “increased visibility in the market.”
“We’re all excited to be in downtown Syracuse,” James Freyer, chairman and CEO of Haylor, Freyer & Coon, said in his remarks before the traditional ribbon cutting held during the firm’s open house.
CBD Construction of Syracuse handled the renovation work in the space, while King + King Architects, also of Syracuse, helped design the office space along with Dalpos Architects & Integrators.
“It really just helps us to continue to build on the momentum that we have in this community, certainly downtown but really in this region,” Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh said at the event.
Haylor, Freyer & Coon has a total of 185 employees, including 130 who work at the new downtown Syracuse space. Besides its headquarters, HF&C operates offices in Johnson City, Ithaca, Watertown, Rochester, and Schenectady, per its website.
Haylor, Freyer & Coon is occupying nearly 40,000 square feet on the top two floors of the building.
“We [envisioned] an office as we would build it out,” Freyer tells CNYBJ in an interview after the ribbon cutting. “[We envisioned] an office for our employees today and our employees of the future.”
The office includes new furniture, workstations, desks that can rise to stand-up height, more natural light, a cafeteria area, a training area, and an internal stairway between the ninth and 10th floors.

MARCY — SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) announced it has started an Esports (electronic sports) program and joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) to offer students a “competitive alternative to more traditional collegiate sports.”
Esports, which have “grown rapidly over the past decade,” have been adopted by several SUNY institutions. The industry is reportedly expected to soon top $1 billion, SUNY Poly contended in a news release. The first-ever collegiate Esports arena in the SUNY system was opened in 2018 at SUNY Canton.
Danbury, Connecticut–based ECAC “is an 80-year old organization with well over 200 members schools across all three NCAA Divisions — I, II and III — that exists to enhance the experience of student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics, and provide great value for universities and colleges, by sponsoring championships, leagues, bowl games, tournaments and other competitions throughout the Northeast,” per its website.
The ECAC also hosts an Esports program that currently involves 23 schools fielding 107 teams across six different Esports games that the ECAC sponsors. The schools include Syracuse University, which joined in September.
SUNY Poly’s adoption of Esports was supported by sophomore Joseph Center, a computer and information science major, who has been involved with Esports competitions for nearly a decade.
“Not everyone is as interested in traditional sports as they are in Esports games, so it definitely attracts a different type of person, especially at a technology-driven institution,” said Center. “Esports have many of the same aspects as traditional sports, particularly for people who are looking for an environment that still offers competition.”
Games offered for students in the spring 2020 semester include Fortnite, Overwatch, FIFA, League of Legends, Super Smash Bros., Ultimate, Hearthstone, and Rocket League.
