The number of people filing first-time applications for unemployment benefits in New York state dipped 4 percent to 15,159 in the week ending Oct. 29 from 15,793 the week before.
That’s according to a news release issued Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor, citing advanced data provided by the state.
It’s the second week in a row that initial jobless claims have decreased in the Empire State, signaling a reduction in layoffs.

In the week ending Oct. 22, New York’s claims fell by 1,240, or 7 percent. That decline was led by fewer layoffs in the state’s transportation and warehousing, accommodation and food service, and public-administration industries, according to the release.
The state data is not seasonally adjusted and is subject to revision. As a result, weekly jobless claims tend to swing from week to week and are affected by seasonal factors.
