The number of people filing initial applications for unemployment benefits in New York state tumbled by more than 11 percent to 16,201 in the week ending June 14, from 18,279 the week before.
That’s the lowest level of claims so far in 2014, surpassing the previous low of 16,729 set in the week ending April 19.
Fewer layoffs in New York’s food services, construction, and information industries led the decline in claims, according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release Thursday.

The number of people continuing to receive unemployment-insurance benefits in New York also fell in the week ending June 14 to 170,946 from 174,252 in the previous week.
It’s the seventh straight week in which continuing claims in the state were below 200,000 while initial claims were under 20,000, according to the Labor Department data.
