MVCC names Beilein head coach of men’s basketball team

UTICA, N.Y. — Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) on Tuesday said it has hired Patrick Beilein as the head coach for its men’s basketball team, the Mohawk Valley Hawks.

Beilein, who is the son of long-time Division I coach John Beilein, lives in Fayetteville, the school said. His appointment will be ratified by the MVCC board of trustees at its August meeting.

The Hawks are part of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III of Division III.

Beilein will take over the coaching duties for a team that made history last season by capturing its first-ever NJCAA national championship. He succeeds Harley Fuller, who is now an associate head coach at Division I Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

Beilein’s coaching career includes leading Le Moyne College (2015-19) to multiple NCAA Division II tournament appearances, earning Northeast 10 Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2017 and 2018.

Under his leadership, the Dolphins secured top tournament seeds and had a 12-game winning streak — the second longest in program history, MVCC said.

Besides Le Moyne, Beilein also served as head coach for the Syracuse Stallions of The Basketball League; varsity boys basketball coach at Baldwinsville High School; player development coach for the NBA’s Utah Jazz; and head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Beilein earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic coaching education from West Virginia University, where he played in 128 games, scored 1,001 career points, and helped lead the Mountaineers to the Elite 8 and Sweet 16 in the 2005 and 2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments.

“MVCC is thrilled to have Coach Beilein join the Hawk family,” Dominic DiMaggio, MVCC’s dean of athletics, said. “Pat’s experience and expertise will enable MVCC Men’s Basketball to continue our championship success at the national level.”
