Area unemployment rates crept up in January, according to figures released by the state Department of Labor.
The unemployment rate for the Binghamton area was 9.6 percent in January, the same rate it was a year ago, but up from 8.3 percent in December.
Syracuse’s rate was 9.5 percent, up from 8.2 percent in December and up from 9.3 percent a year ago.
