JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. — The West Family Branch YMCA will use $1.2 million in state funding to renovate the branch’s pool to improve activities that include swimming lessons, lap swims, aqua therapy and group-exercise classes.
The office of New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie announced the funding. Heastie on Wednesday visited Johnson City with Assemblymember Donna Lupardo (D–Binghamton) as part of Heastie’s annual statewide tour.
“The YMCA plays such a vital role in communities, including providing swimming lessons for those who may not otherwise have access,” Heastie said in the announcement. “The funding Assemblymember Lupardo and I announced today will ensure that the YMCA can continue to operate their remaining pool, offering swimming lessons – a lifelong and lifesaving skill – and other pool activities for families.”

Renovating the West Branch pool became a priority after the Binghamton Branch pool was closed to make room for additional housing and shelter space.”
Both Speaker Heastie and Lupardo toured the West Family Branch of the YMCA before announcing the money.
