UTICA, N.Y. — Utica University on Wednesday said the U.S. Department of Education has renewed funding for the school’s TRIO student-support services program for another five-year period.
TRIO student-support services provide individualized academic, career planning, graduate-school preparation, financial literacy, and other support to students who are classified as first-generation, income-eligible, or receiving a learning accommodation, Utica University said in its announcement.
Utica University cited the U.S. Department of Education as indicating the school was one of 962 TRIO student-support services programs funded out of more than 1,700 eligible applications.

This program makes a real difference for the families we serve, and it’s extremely gratifying to know that our TRIO team will continue to have the resources they need to do their vital work,” Utica University President Todd Pfannestiel said in the announcement. “We are grateful to our representatives in Congress and to the Department of Education for their efforts toward extending this grant funding through 2030.”
The word TRIO isn’t an acronym. The term TRIO for the federal program originated from the first three programs established to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds: Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services.
The website of the U.S. Department of Education has this description of the program: “The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects.”
