SYRACUSE — The Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York (CHFWCNY) is giving $15,000 grants to three midwifery services in the Syracuse area and one in Oswego and Fulton.
Traditions Midwifery, PLLC, and Linda Lovig Midwifery Services in Syracuse will receive the grants. So will Upstate University Hospital at Community General in the town of Onondaga and Oswego County OB-GYN, P.C., which has locations in Oswego and Fulton.
The grants aim to expand midwifery services for low income women. The foundation also plans to provide technical assistance to help the midwifery services create sustainable business plans for serving those with low incomes.

“Despite strong evidence that shows good outcomes for babies delivered by midwives, the number of licensed midwives in Central New York is low compared to other parts of the state,” CHFWCNY President Ann Monroe said in a news release. “By supporting the development and growth of midwifery services for low income women in the region, the foundation wants to improve the health of mothers and their babies.”
Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown is also in line to receive one of the $15,000 midwifery grants.
CHFWCNY is a private, independent foundation that attempts to improve health and health care for Central New York and Western New York residents.
