SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The City of Syracuse will host an in–person, commercial driver’s license (CDL) hiring event on Sept. 25 from 1-4 p.m. at CNY Works Career Center at 960 James St. in Syracuse.
The event is a partnership involving the City of Syracuse, CNY Works, and New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL), the office of Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh said in the Wednesday announcement.
CDLs are required for city positions that operate large or heavy vehicles, including, but not limited to, snowplows, dump trucks, payloaders, and excavators, Walsh’s office said.

The hiring event will give commercial drivers the opportunity to apply for various positions within the City’s departments of public works (DPW), parks & recreation, and water. These positions require proof of a CDL license and a driving test.
Participants are asked to pre-register at goto.syr.gov/CDLJobFair or by scanning the QR code on the city advertisement.
Applicants must bring proof of their CDL license. Residents who do not have a CDL are encouraged to attend and learn about ways to obtain one from the City and NYSDOL.
“There are great benefits to being a City Employee such as we offer a strong healthcare plan and pension,” Ann Fordock, first deputy commissioner of public works, said in the announcement. “For us, a major benefit of the hiring event is that we get to connect with residents who may not know about the many opportunities within city government.”
Those attending the hiring event should park and enter from the back of the CNY Works Center. The front entrance is ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible and will be in operation for the event for those who need it.
To expedite hiring, managers may offer positions the same day that they conduct interviews, Walsh’s office said.
As a requirement, residents must live in the city of Syracuse for employment, although some exceptions apply.
Residents who cannot make the event and would like to learn more about the City’s available positions may visit syr.gov/jobs for advertised employment opportunities and salary information.
