SYRACUSE, N.Y. — With the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Syracuse, Centro says its Better Bus project will consider how fixed-route bus service — and the introduction of other on-demand services — could complement BRT and better fit the community’s travel needs.
The public-transportation provider is planning to redesign its Onondaga County bus network to align the Centro network with present-day demand and travel patterns.
The redesign also seeks to allow Centro to better meet community travel needs through delivery of “more efficient and effective” service; and adjust local service and integrate new modes such as micro transit to reallocate service within BRT corridors and promote BRT connectivity, Centro said.

Centro went on to say that a study is underway that looks at travel patterns; ridership; the supply of transit service versus the demand for transit service; and how transit service compares to driving. The effort seeks to evaluate how Centro’s current network is performing and to determine the demand for transit in the area.
Centro’s website includes preliminary study results, which are part of numerous data points that are being analyzed to best redesign Syracuse’s bus network.
“The Better Bus initiative is all about streamlining our transportation system, enhancing connectivity, and improving operational efficiency,” Christopher Tuff, deputy CEO at Centro, said in the announcement.
Centro, along with its project consultant, Arcadis, will be hosting several open-house events the week of Feb. 3. They’re meant to allow the community to connect with the project team to learn more about proposed changes and share feedback.
