BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Broome County Executive Jason Garnar on Tuesday announced two new COVID-19-related deaths in the last day, bringing the county’s total to 116.
The latest victims were a female in her 80s and a male in his 60s.
Garnar also reported that Broome County had 105 infections in the last day, bringing its total to 4,849 since the pandemic started. The county currently has 580 active coronavirus cases, up from 541 the day before, and 29 people are hospitalized with the illness, up one from Monday.

Broome County has seen a rise in COVID-19 cases in the last three weeks after a two-week decline, the county executive noted.
“The vast majority of our cases are coming from the community. They’re community spread,” Garnar said in a Zoom briefing. “We’re seeing a significant amount of cases [from] people in their 20s. We want to send a special reminder to people in that age group that you need be especially vigilant as well.”
He said he was concerned about people in that group spreading the virus to older relatives in their household that are more susceptible to the illness.
