BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — Broome County on Friday reported another 72 new coronavirus cases in the last day, its highest one-day total to date, according to its COVID-19 online dashboard. This brings the county’s sum to 1,682 cases since the start of the pandemic.
On Thursday, Broome County officials reported 54 news COVID-19 test positives, which was the highest daily amount up to that point. The jump in cases prompted Broome County Executive Jason Garnar to ask county residents to stay home for the next week.
“Stay home for the next seven days,” Garnar said in a Thursday afternoon news conference. “We need you to stay home to help our community get control of this. This is starting to get out of control.”

Broome County now has 304 active COVID-19 cases, up from 243 the day before. The county had just 60 active cases a week ago.
In terms of specific actions they could take, Garnar urged Broome County residents to get takeout food instead of going out to eat in person. “If you have a small social gathering that’s scheduled, reschedule it. Take advantage of virtual resources. Zoom with your friends,” he added.
