COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. — Otsego County and Bassett Healthcare Network have inked a contract until the fall of 2027 for medical transport across the region utilizing Otsego County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Bassett announced.

The EMS provider has long assisted Bassett with inter-facility transfers necessary when patients need specialized or advanced-care options not offered at the facility where they were first admitted. The contract between the county and Bassett formalizes this existing partnership to make it more dependable and streamlined, the organizations said.

“We are thankful to have found a wonderful community partner in Otsego County EMS to transport and care for our patients reliably and efficiently,” Bassett Healthcare Network President/CEO Staci Thompson said in the announcement. “Ensuring Bassett patients can seamlessly be sent from one network hospital to another is a crucial component of our operations, so this partnership is deeply impactful for our patients and practitioners.”

Under the contract, Bassett pays for all inter-facility transport costs and is reimbursed through patient billing. Otsego County said it will not accrue any costs to taxpayers. The contract runs until Oct. 1, 2027.

“The launching of this public-private partnership between Bassett Healthcare Network and Otsego County is a ‘win-win’ for both organizations,” Otsego County Board of Representatives Chair Edwin Frazier, Jr. said. “The biggest winner here, though, are the patients, our constituents, and visitors who are being professionally transferred to the Bassett facility that best meets their respective needs.”

The partnership will reduce the time volunteer squads and county EMS need to spend waiting at emergency rooms, allowing them to get back to their communities and service, Otsego County Public Safety and Legal Affairs Committee Chairman Dan Wilbur noted.

Established in 2021, Otsego County EMS provides support to more than a dozen volunteer EMS companies operating throughout the region.
