SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Avalon Document Services announced Monday it has acquired Spaulding Law Printing, Inc., an appellate printer that operates at 231 Walton St. in Syracuse.
The company didn’t release any terms of the acquisition agreement. The deal closed in late November, the company said in responding to an email inquiry from the Business Journal News Network (BJNN).
Avalon said it purchased Spaulding to expand its appellate division, which serves clients in the law-practice sector.

On its own, Spaulding Law Printing was the oldest appellate printer in upstate New York. The firm was locally owned and operated and serviced law firms for 75 years.
During the transition, Spaulding Law Printing will retain its name under the Avalon Document Services parent moniker, Avalon said.
Alexander Douglas, former president of Spaulding Law Printing, assumed control of the company 30 years ago and became “an expert” in appellate services.
“We were humbled and honored when Mr. Douglas contacted us to discuss the possibility of Avalon taking on his loyal client base,” Shawn Thrall, president and co-owner of Avalon, said in the news release.
Douglas will work as a consultant with Matt Magill, who leads Avalon’s appellate division, during the transitional period.
“I am working with Avalon to ensure that my clients will continue to receive everything from Avalon that they have come to expect from me over the past 30 years,” Douglas said in the release.
Avalon didn’t acquire any new employees in the acquisition, so its total employee count remains at 95, the company said in responding to the BJNN email inquiry.
Founded in 2000, Avalon specializes in document services with offices in New York state and Ohio. It provides copying, scanning, printing, appellate publishing, and litigation-support services for law firms, architects, engineers, and the general business community.
