ROME, N.Y. — The Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate in Rome had a $599 million economic impact on the Utica-Rome and Syracuse metropolitan statistical areas, which includes Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties, in fiscal year 2024.
It’s an increase of 17.7 percent, or $90 million, from fiscal year 2023, the Rome Lab announced. That impact includes $318 million allocated towards annual expenditures within the five-county region. This includes contracts for local service and facility modernization along with research and development contracts awarded to contractors within the five counties.
There were 487 local contractors under Air Force contracts during the year, with an annual estimated payroll of $78 million.

With funding totaling over $1.6 billion for the year, the Rome Lab had a workforce of 843 military and civilian employees in 2024 with combined annual salaries of $130 million. Almost 93 percent of those employees live within the five-county region.

The organization then compiles and analyzes the data according to official Air Force directorates.

It plays an integral role in leading the discovery, development, and integration of affordable warfighting technologies for the nation’s air, space, and cyberspace forces.
