A Message to the Central New York Business Community

Dedicated to our founder and to the team who made it all possible

Since 1986, The Central New York Business Journal has been a family business rooted in a simple but deeply held belief: that this region deserved a responsible, trusted voice dedicated to its business community.

My father, Norm Poltenson, z”l, founded the Central New York Business Journal because he believed Central New York needed reliable, thoughtful business journalism and information business owners and leaders could trust as they made decisions, built companies, and strengthened the regional economy. His goal was not just to report news, but also to serve the business community with integrity and purpose.

Over the years, that mission grew to reflect the full breadth of our region. The Business Journal proudly covered a 16-county Central New York area, sharing business news and stories from the North Country, through Central New York, the Mohawk Valley, and down to the Southern Tier area. Our news coverage in the Business Journal and on our website CNYBJ.com captured the people, companies, and industries that power this market.

Beyond editorial coverage, the Business Journal, through our sister company BizEventz, convened the business community through events and recognitions that celebrated leadership, innovation, and impact, creating meaningful connections across the region.

I began working at the Business Journal more than three decades ago, learning the business in a variety of roles and gaining the greatest gift of all: the opportunity to work side by side with my father. In 2014, I acquired the Business Journal from my parents and continued building on the foundation they created as a second-generation family business. Even after retiring, my father remained a trusted mentor, and I am forever grateful for the years we shared working together.

I am incredibly proud of the work we produced across every platform from our weekly edition to our daily website and news alerts, to our specialty publications, magazines, and the Book of Lists. Our focus was always on delivering credible, trusted content to a highly engaged business audience, and doing so with consistency, care, and respect for the community we served.

Throughout its history, the Business Journal evolved across platforms and formats, but its purpose never changed. We existed to inform, connect, and support the business community with accuracy, credibility, and respect. I truly believe my father’s vision was fulfilled.

This final letter is dedicated first to my father, whose values, integrity, and belief in this region shaped everything we did and second to the extraordinary team, past and present, who brought that vision to life every day. Your dedication, professionalism, and resilience carried the Business Journal through both strong and challenging times. I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished together.

To the Central New York business community, our loyal advertisers, subscribers, partners, trusted advisors, and readers, thank you for the trust you placed in us and for the relationships we built over the years. It was a privilege to serve you.

Over the coming weeks, we will be winding down the business of the Central New York Business Journal, and the January 26 issue will be our final weekly edition.

While this chapter is coming to a close, the impact of the Business Journal and my father’s legacy will continue through the businesses, leaders, and communities it helped inform and connect.

This has been our story. It’s an honor to share it with you.

With sincere gratitude,
Marny Nesher
