GEDDES, N.Y. — Crucible Industries, LLC is warning its 158 employees that the Geddes plant could close in a few months, saying the reason for the closure is “economic.”
That’s according to a New York WARN notice posted Dec. 5. WARN is short for Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification.
The New York State WARN Act requires businesses to give early warning of closing and layoffs, per the website of the New York State Department of Labor.

Crucible Industries, LLC, a specialty steel manufacturer, is located at 575 State Fair Blvd. in the town of Geddes near the New York State Fairgrounds.
The notice lists a closure start date of March 5, 2025 and an end date of March 19, 2025.
The impacted union is the United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CIO, Locals 1277, 14532-18, and 2924, the notice indicates.
The firm’s website says Crucible’s roots trace back to 1776, when the Naylor and Sanderson Steel Mill was established in Sheffield, England.
A century later, the company, which was then known as Sanderson Brothers, was exporting increasing quantities of tool steel to America and it was decided to establish a steelmaking plant in the Syracuse area.
The firm has been known as Crucible Industries, LLC since 2009, per its website, which has a page listing several key developments between 1776 and 2009.
