New York farmers produced 73.5 million bushels of grain corn last year, down 13 percent from 84.4 million bushels in 2015 and off 27 percent from 100.6 million bushels in 2014.
That’s according to a report issued Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service. The agency didn’t provide a reason for the production decline.
The USDA estimates that the area harvested for grain corn in the Empire State totaled 570,000 acres in 2016, down from 590,000 in 2015 and 680,000 in 2014.

Corn yields in New York also fell to 129 bushels per acre last year from 143 bushels in 2015 and 148 bushels in 2014.
Nationally, the picture was positive. The USDA reported that U.S. grain-corn production totaled more than 15.1 billion bushels in 2016, up 11 percent from 13.6 million bushels in the prior year.
