UTICA, N.Y. — Cooperative Magnetic Imaging (CMI) of Utica announced it has expanded its MRI services with a new MRI machine that is faster and more powerful than traditional units.
The company will celebrate the expansion next Thursday, Nov. 9 with a 5 p.m. ribbon-cutting event with the Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce at CMI’s office at the Utica Business Park.
An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan has become one of the fastest growing types of medical diagnostic tests in the U.S., because it can provide non-invasive diagnostic images of soft tissues, bone, fat, and muscles to help detect many medical conditions.

CMI’s new 3 Tesla Siemens Skyra MRI will provide “better detection of subtle lesions and clearer views of arteries and veins, often without the need for contrast,” according to a Greater Utica Chamber news release. The new unit will be able to accommodate patients weighing up to 500 pounds and is 50 percent faster than the conventional units, according to CMI.
“The new scanner will be preferred for most specialty exams and for prostate cancer staging, vascular (blood vessel) imaging and neurology (brain, spine) exams. The 3T is faster, meaning greater patient tolerance as well,” Dr. John Picano, medical director at CMI, said in the release.
