Airports serving Watertown, Rome, Saranac Lake, and the Elmira/Corning area will use federal funding for specific projects and airfield safety.
The regional airports are among 13 awarded a total of more than $27.3 million in federal funding, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–N.Y.) and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D–N.Y.) announced Thursday.
This federal funding was administered through the FAA’s airport-improvement program, the lawmakers said.

Griffiss International Airport in Rome will use more than $3.2 million to rehabilitate its apron and nearly $232,000 to construct a taxiway. An apron is the area where aircraft are parked, unloaded, loaded, refueled, and boarded by passengers.
Watertown International Airport was awarded nearly $900,000 to install a runway vertical/visual guidance system.
In addition, Elmira/Corning Regional Airport will use more than $4.3 million to reconstruct the airport apron.
The project awards also included more than $804,000 for Adirondack Regional Airport in Saranac Lake, which will use the funding to acquire snow-removal equipment, per the announcement.
