LENOX, N.Y. — Madison County Sheriff’s deputies arrested David T. Van Marter, the former owner of a chimney cleaning company, charging he burglarized the business after it had been seized by the state for taxes.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the state Department of Taxation and Finance seized Syracuse Chimney and Stove on Route 31 in Lenox on Feb. 5, “due to Van Marter owing New York State taxes.”
After the business was seized, deputies said, Van Marter, 39, of 502 North Highland Ave., East Syracuse, unlawfully entered the building and stole $1,100 worth of property.

Van Marter was charged Feb. 9 with burglary in the third degree and grand larceny in the fourth degree, both felonies. He was held at Madison County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail or $5,000 bond.
