ONONDAGA, N.Y. — People interested in a career in manufacturing can get involved in a paid apprenticeship program that includes benefits and built-in pay increases.
Onondaga Community College (OCC) is working with local employers to offer an apprenticeship accelerator career-training program. The college will train participants during the 10-week program for positions that include CNC machinist, machinist, tool maker, and maintenance mechanic.
Students will be paid during the program, OCC said in a news release.

Participants who successfully complete the coursework will enter into a four-year apprenticeship in advanced manufacturing that includes benefits and built-in pay increases. Students will complete their apprenticeships at area companies that include Bartell Machinery Systems in Rome; Kilian Manufacturing in Syracuse; Precision Systems Manufacturing Inc. in Clay; and at L. & J.G. Stickley in Manlius.
OCC will host the 10-week program. Anyone interested in a career in manufacturing can register for an information session set for Feb. 20 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the college’s Coulter Hall, room C116. People can register for the event at www.aactjobs.com.
OCC’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development coordinates the collaboration behind the apprenticeship accelerator career-training program.
OCC provides the training with additional apprenticeship, project, and employer support provided by the U.S. Department of Labor’s American Apprenticeship Initiative, the Manufacturers Association of Central New York, and Boston, Massachusetts–based Jobs for the Future (JFF).
JFF is a nonprofit that “builds educational and economic opportunity for underserved populations” in the U.S., according to its website.
