The number of people filing initial applications for unemployment benefits in New York state rose more than 4 percent to 21,140 in the week ending Nov. 22, from 20,284 the week before.
That’s according to a U.S. Department of Labor news release issued Thursday.
It’s the third straight week that initial jobless claims have increased in the Empire State, signaling a rise in layoffs.

The number of people continuing to receive unemployment-insurance benefits in New York also rose to 168,174 from 164,304 in the prior week, according to the Labor Department data. Continuing claims in the state have now increased five out of the last six weeks.
The state data is not seasonally adjusted.
