The number of people filing initial applications for unemployment benefits in New York state fell 16 percent to 15,910 in the week ending Sept. 20, from 18,969 the week before.
That’s the lowest number of weekly jobless claims in the state since October 2007, according to data the U.S. Department of Labor issued Thursday.
Fewer layoffs in the Empire State’s construction, manufacturing, and transportation and warehousing industries led the decline in the latest week, according to a Department of Labor news release.

The number of people continuing to receive unemployment-insurance benefits in New York declined 10 percent to 156,030 in the week ending Sept. 20, from 173,595 in the prior week, according to the Labor Department data. That’s also a nearly seven-year low in that figure.
The state data is not seasonally adjusted.
