CICERO — SRC, Inc. won a $20 million contract from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to test new chemicals entering the U.S. market.
The five-year deal calls for SRC, a nonprofit research and development corporation, to evaluate the manufacture, use, and environmental consequences of the new substances. The company will also develop new methods to assess existing chemicals in commercial and consumer products and identify safer alternatives.
SRC has been working with the EPA since 1971 and has evaluated tens of thousands of chemicals to determine health hazards and their effects on the environment.

“SRC is an internationally-recognized leader in toxicology,” SRC President Paul Tremont said in a news release. “This contract will allow us to apply our advanced scientific assessment methodologies and further develop predictive tools that support the EPA’s pollution prevention principals.”
SRC and its for-profit manufacturing subsidiary, SRCTec, together employ more than 1,100 people at 15 locations in Colorado, Maine, Maryland, New York, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia. The firms are headquartered in Cicero and also have an office in Rome.
They work mainly on defense-related projects.
