New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made the announcement in a news release distributed today.
As Driscoll Foods sought to expand its operations and territory, it considered the former Quandts Foodservice Distributors facility in Amsterdam, Cuomo’s office said.
Rosemont, Ill.–based US Foods, Inc. acquired Quandts last October and its Amsterdam facility remained open through this year’s first quarter before shifting operations to Albany, according to a news release posted Oct. 18 at the US Foods website.
To encourage the expansion project in the Mohawk Valley, Empire State Development (ESD) offered Driscoll Foods a grant of up to $200,000 to assist with the purchase and renovations in the “distressed” area of Amsterdam, Cuomo’s office said.
The project means another use for the foodservice-distribution facility, instead of sitting vacant, Cuomo’s office said.
Driscoll Foods plans to be operational in the Amsterdam facility within weeks, Cuomo’s office said.
The company will create nearly 60 new jobs with potential for further expansion in New York, the office added.
Family-owned Driscoll Foods in 1971 began its delivery business with a single truck. Over the last 40 years, the company has grown to service the Tri-State area and now operates more than 90 trucks.
The firm currently employs more than 350 people and recently built a 200,000-square-foot facility that provides for daily delivery of more than 10,000 stocked products to their customers, according to the governor’s office.
Driscoll Foods distributes fresh meats, poultry, milk and dairy products, along with frozen, grocery, beverage, equipment, paper and cleaning supplies.
