SYRACUSE — The Downtown Committee is planning another retail recruitment event for Oct. 18.
The committee invited more than 1,500 retailers from around the state to the event, which will feature panel sessions and give attendees an overview of the retail climate in downtown Syracuse. The committee is also running a retail-themed television spot in the Rochester, Ithaca, Cortland, Binghamton, Auburn, Oswego, and Syracuse markets.
The Oct. 18 session is the committee’s second recruitment event. More than 50 retailers attended a similar event in June.

Since October 2011, 24 new businesses opened in downtown Syracuse, according to the committee. That’s up from 13 between 2010 and 2011 and nine between 2009 and 2010.
“With a growing residential base and continued large-scale developments, retailers see new opportunities for success and growth in Downtown Syracuse,” Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee, said in a news release. “Our expanded retail recruitment efforts are intended to build off of the transformation taking place downtown and help these retailers who are taking a closer look at downtown Syracuse to take the next steps in locating a business here.”
