UTICA — The Mohawk Valley Heart Institute (MVHI) is celebrating its 15th anniversary of cardiac services. The first open-heart surgery was performed at the institute on Oct. 17, 1997.
In its first year, MVHI performed more than 325 open-heart surgeries and had 8,000 inpatient and outpatient rehab visits. In 1999, MVHI began its angioplasty program, and, in 2001, opened a catheterization lab in 2001.
By its fifth year, MVHI had completed 2,319 cardiac surgeries and 4,474 coronary angioplasties.

To date, MVHI has performed more than 51,286 cardiac catheterizations, 18,406 angioplasties, 6,635 cardiac surgeries, 9,731 electrophysiology procedures, and seen 86,634 outpatient cardiac-rehab visits.
