The New York State Bar Association is offering grants to help government and public interest lawyers repay their student loans.
The grants come from the association’s Steven C. Krane Special Committee on Student Loan Assistance for the Public Interest. Attorneys must have practiced public interest or government law for at least five years to be eligible for the grants.
Priority will be given to civil legal services attorneys, according to the bar. The committee plans to award four grants worth up to $4,000 each.

“Many public interest attorneys who have outstanding debt live paycheck to paycheck, while their colleagues in the private sector earn considerably more,” Krane committee co-chair Edwina Frances Martin said in a news release. “Grantees have said even a modest grant helps them emotionally and financially.”
