SYRACUSE — The governing board of the Hiscock Legal Aid Society, a not-for-profit charitable organization that provides free legal assistance to those in need, recently announced the addition of two new directors.
Thomas C. Buckel, Jr. and Margaret M. Cassady are joining the board for their first three-year terms.
Buckel is a partner at Hancock Estabrook, LLP, in the Syracuse–based law firm’s litigation practice. He has more than 30 years experience trying complex commercial cases, business lawsuits, antitrust and competition claims, and banking and financial actions.

He was elected to the Onondaga County Legislature in 2007. Buckel is a member of the board of trustees of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry; Le Moyne College, Board of Regents; Sisters of the Third Franciscan Order, Development Board; and Canisius College, Pre-Law Advisory Board.
Cassady is senior deputy general counsel of Excellus Health Plan, Inc., Central New York’s largest health insurer. Before joining Excellus in 2005, she was a member (partner) in the Syracuse law firm of Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC. Cassady holds a juris doctorate degree from Rutgers University School of Law, Camden, and earned her bachelor’s degree in music education from SUNY Fredonia.
She is a member of the Onondaga County and New York State Bar Associations, and the American Health Lawyers Association. Cassady is currently serving as a member of the board of directors of Sarah House, and has previously served as director and/or officer of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, the Onondaga County Bar Foundation, the Onondaga County Bar Association, the Central New York Girl Scout Council, and other organizations.
The 2013 slate of officers for the Hiscock Legal Aid Society board of directors are: Richard C. Engel, chair; Suzanne O. Galbato, chair-elect; Virginia A. Hoveman, vice chair; and Joseph P. Hardick, secretary-treasurer.
