SYRACUSE — Scotsman Media Group of Syracuse is ending publication of its Pennysaver newspapers and as a result is cutting 60 jobs, or about one-third of its workforce.
Publication of the Pennysavers ended with Sunday’s edition, according to a news release Scotsman issued today. The publishing and printing company published its first Pennysaver in 1954.
Scotsman will continue to provide commercial printing and distribution services. Publications including the Valley News, Today’s CNY Woman, Vacationer, and others will continue, the company said.

The firm is closing its Auburn and Cortland offices. Most of the employees at those locations lost their jobs, according to the news release. Scotsman also cut jobs at its offices in Syracuse, Fulton, and Chenango Bridge offices.
“Many factors led to the downturn in the company’s Pennysaver business including, but not limited to, a myriad of other advertising alternatives in the market,” Scotsman President William Veit said in the release. “While continued rejuvenation of the Pennysaver product line to better meet advertiser expectations was given consideration, it was decided it would be wiser to redirect our people and resources to focus on our core strengths and more profitable businesses.”
