The unemployment rate throughout upstate New York rose in January, according to data released today by the state Labor Department.
The unemployment rate in the Syracuse metro area climbed to 9.8 percent from 9.5 in January 2012, to 10.2 percent from 9.6 percent in the Utica-Rome area, and to 10.2 percent from 9.8 percent in the Binghamton area. Statewide, the unemployment rate was 8.4 percent in January, up from 8.2 percent in December and the same as January 2012.
The state added 29,600 private sector jobs in January, an increase of 0.4 percent from December, according to the Labor Department. New York added a total of 102,600 private sector jobs between January 2012 and January 2013.
