ONONDAGA — The New York State Education Department has approved a new two-year degree program in nuclear-energy technology at Onondaga Community College (OCC), the school announced.
OCC will begin offering the degree program this fall. It has capacity for 24 students.
Students in the nuclear-energy technology associate-degree program will be trained, skilled, and qualified to work in any nuclear reactor in the country, the college contends. OCC is now one of 36 colleges authorized to offer this degree.

The nuclear-energy industry has informed OCC that it estimates about half of its work force will be eligible for retirement in the next decade. That work force demand has led to the creation of this program, the school said.
OCC used a grant of $161,000 from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and $100,000 from the Constellation Energy Nuclear Group (CENG) to develop the degree program and its curriculum, the school said.
CENG operates the Nine Mile Point nuclear station in Scriba.
Students interested in the nuclear-energy technology program can attend an information session this Thursday April 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in room 101 of the Whitney Applied Technology Center on campus.
Representatives of the school’s various technology programs, the admission office, and the math department will be available to speak with prospective students.
