BINGHAMTON — Not-for-profit staff and board members can learn about how to work together better and improve their organizations at an upcoming Binghamton University seminar.
As part of its Spring Seminar Series, the university’s College of Community and Public Affairs will host “Nonprofit Governance as Leadership,” from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 8 at the University Downtown Center, 67 Washington St., Binghamton.
The workshop will cover evolving ideas about how boards can collaborate with the professional staff of their organizations to ensure the two groups work together effectively, according to a Binghamton University news release.

This workshop is for executive directors, other nonprofit staff, and nonprofit board members who have experience in governance but are considering how to strengthen the board and leverage its strengths to advance the mission of their organization. Many of the ideas in this workshop were borrowed from the book, “Governance as Leadership,” by Richard Chait, William Ryan, and Barbara Taylor, according to the release.
David Campbell, associate professor and chair of the Department of Public Administration at Binghamton University, will conduct the seminar. Campbell teaches classes in nonprofit management and leadership as well as philanthropy, and has held leadership positions in nonprofit organizations in New York City and Cleveland, the news release stated. He currently serves on the board of the United Way of New York State and recently completed a term as board chair of the Family & Children’s Service of Ithaca.
