PAINTED POST, N.Y. — New York State Police on Friday arrested Joseph W. Canner, 37, of Painted Post, after a Steuben County grand jury indicted him for 2nd degree grand larceny and 1,042 counts of 1st degree falsifying business records, felonies.
From September 2013 to May 2018, while an employee at the former Sitel Group, a business-processing outsourcing company in Painted Post, Canner allegedly stole more than $100,000 through the sale of illegally marketed Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper subscriptions on his personal eBay account, the New York State Police said.
The theft cost Dow Jones, the parent company of WSJ, more than $200,000 to produce, transport, deliver, and service the stolen subscriptions and resulted in more than $500,000 in lost company revenue, the State Police added.
