SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse University (SU) has announced the appointment of Wayne Westervelt as director of communications for the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF).
Westervelt will also serve in the same role for the school’s Office of Veteran and Military Affairs (OVMA).
Mike Haynie, SU’s vice chancellor of veteran and military affairs, made the announcement in a news release the university distributed on Thursday.

In this role, Westervelt will lead the communications, media relations, strategic messaging, and outreach efforts of both the IVMF and the OVMA in support of the school’s “longstanding commitment to veterans and their families.”
“We’re thrilled to have Wayne join the Syracuse team. As the director of communications for the IVMF and the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, he brings both a wealth of experience, and a passion for our work,” Haynie said in the release.
Prior to joining Syracuse University, Westervelt was vice president for marketing and communications at Cazenovia College.
Westervelt previously served as the communications and public-information manager at the Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board, a Syracuse–based regional-planning council.
