UTICA, N.Y. — The Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) in 2018 generated $863 million in economic activity in the region.
That’s according to an analysis that the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) conducted.

MVHS announced some of the findings from the analysis in a news release.
The HANYS analysis found that MVHS generates more than 7,000 jobs. The figure reflects both the number of health-system jobs (nearly 6,000 employees, including 4,200 full-time employees) as well as those jobs generated “as a result of MVHS employees purchasing goods and services locally.”
The analysis also found that MVHS expends $286 million in payroll annually to compensate its employees. It found that the MVHS spending and payroll generates $113 million in tax dollars.
The HANYS Economic & Community Benefit report for MVHS also indicates that the organization invested $73 million in community initiatives, which include subsidizing care and services to those in need and supporting, with both financial and human resources, community health-improvement activities.
“When we think of hospitals, it’s often about the medical care they provide to the community,” Darlene Stromstad, president and CEO of MVHS, said in the release. “What is often overlooked is the significant role hospitals and health systems play in the economic health of a region. In fact, MVHS is one of the top private-sector employers in the county, but our contributions extend far beyond our role as employer.”
The HANYS analysis examined the economic activity and community benefits of New York hospitals and reports are available at the statewide, regional, legislative district, and hospital- and system-specific levels, MVHS said.
