SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Downtown Farmers Market will open for its 50th season on Tuesday in Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse.

The weekly event, spanning from mid-June to mid-October, is presented by the Downtown Committee of Syracuse Inc.

The Downtown Committee expects two dozen farmers for the market’s opening day, and patrons can enjoy live music during lunchtime, performed by Tom Gilbo, a local Elvis impersonator.

Every Tuesday through Oct. 11 (rain or shine), the market has “fresh, locally-grown” fruit, vegetables and plants, as well as baked goods and specialty items including homemade soaps and pet treats, the Downtown Committee said.

As the growing season continues, the market will include as many as 50 of the region’s best farmers and produce dealers.

Live music will continue (weather permitting) each Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. as part of the “Lunchtime Live Music Series.”

The series is made possible through funds from Onondaga County. Those funds are administered by CNY Arts and the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts, the Downtown Committee noted.

“Community Days”

New this year to help mark the 50th season, the Downtown Committee is introducing “Community Days” to “help show our appreciation” for all of the industries that contribute to the community.

If patrons identify with one or more of the categories identified in the accompanying list (seen below) they’re encouraged to visit the market’s information booth on that designated “day.” They can pick up a free swag item and enter a drawing “designed exclusively” for “Community Day” participants to win a $50 gift card to a downtown Syracuse business.

In addition to the free drawing to highlight “Community Days,” the Downtown Committee also offers a free drawing open to all market visitors, featuring an item — or a basket — that a participating Market vendor has donated.
