  • St. Joseph’s Health opens heartburn center

    SYRACUSE, N.Y. — St. Joseph’s Health has announced the opening of a heartburn center at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center.

    The facility describes it as the “first dedicated and comprehensive heartburn-treatment center in the greater Syracuse region.”

    The new center is located at specialty services inside the hospital, St. Joseph’s said in a news release.

  • Carthage Area Hospital adds lab services at community health center

    CARTHAGE, N.Y. — Carthage Area Hospital is expanding lab services at its community health center at 117 North Mechanic St., beginning April 3.
    The clinic-based service means patients will “no longer have to travel” to complete lab work, Carthage Area Hospital said in a news release.
    A new full-time phlebotomist has joined the clinic staff to handle lab draws at the downtown location, the organization noted.

    MOHAWK, N.Y. — Mohawk Valley Ambulance Corps (MOVAC) announced it will continue working with Priority Billing to provide billing services for its nearly 9,000 annual medical transports.

    Knoxville, Tennessee–based Priority Ambulance, a national ambulance network, owns Priority Billing. It is also the parent company of Kunkel Ambulance which operates in Utica, according to its news release.

    UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) — parent company of UnitedHealthcare, the nation’s largest health insurer — closed on the acquisition of POMCO last Friday.

  • State awards MVHS $300 million grant for downtown Utica hospital project

    UTICA, N.Y. — New York State has awarded Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) a $300 million grant to help pay for a hospital it wants to build in downtown Utica.

    The health-care facility transformation grant is part of the “budget extender” that state lawmakers approved on Monday, MVHS said in a news release issued Tuesday.

    MVHS estimates the “integrated health campus” will cost $480 million for a 750,000-square-foot facility. The remaining $180 million will come from MVHS capital, bonds and fundraising, the organization said.

  • Upstate Medical names Licinio dean of College of Medicine

    SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate Medical University has named Dr. Julio Licinio senior VP and dean of the school’s College of Medicine.

    The appointment is effective July 1, Dr. Danielle Laraque-Arena, president of Upstate Medical, said in a news release.

    Licinio assumes the role that Dr. David Duggan previously held before he stepped down as dean of the College of Medicine last Oct. 15 to take a six-month sabbatical before returning to the Upstate Medical faculty.
